Chapter Fifteen

The research West Investigations had compiled on Tate Harwood was thorough. His cell phone number was listed among the contact information. It took a moment to convince Tate that the call wasn’t a joke or crank call, but just as she’d predicted, once she’d convinced Tate she was who she said she was, he agreed to meet with her. They agreed to a time the next morning and Bria ended the call just as Ryan led Detectives Roslak and Morris into the conference room.

Their arrival seemed to suck all the air out of the room.

Bria glanced from Xavier to Ryan. The two men shared a look, conveying information only the two of them were privy to. What was clear, however, was the tension in both their bodies and the hardness in their expressions.

Detective Roslak stepped in front of Xavier. “We have a few more questions about the night you found Bernard Steele, Mr. Nichols.”

“Why don’t you and Detective Morris have a seat, then?” Xavier gestured to the chairs surrounding the conference room table. “I’ll be happy to answer whatever questions you have.”

Morris’s smile was feral. “Actually, we’d like you to answer them down at the station if you don’t mind.”

Xavier’s expression remained unchanged. “And if I do mind?”

“Then we’ll have to change this from a request to something more formal,” Detective Roslak answered.

Bria took a step closer to Xavier. “Wait a minute—” Her voice came out high-pitched and laced with all the fear for Xavier she felt at that moment. “What the hell is going on here? Xavier didn’t even know Bernie.”

Ryan laid a hand on her shoulders. “Let’s stay calm here. Xavier, you go with the detectives. I’ll have Brandon meet you at the station.”

Detective Morris glared at Ryan. “An attorney isn’t necessary. As we said, we just have a few more questions for Mr. Nichols.”

“Let’s not be cute, Detective,” Xavier growled. “You’re not really giving me a choice. Answer your questions voluntarily or you’ll arrest me, right?”

Both remained silent.

“I’d say an attorney is most definitely in order,” Ryan said.

Bria grasped Xavier’s hand and squeezed. “I’m going with you.”

She wasn’t exactly sure why the detectives wanted to talk to Xavier, but it was clear from the expressions on his and Ryan’s faces that they thought the situation was serious. Whatever was going on, she wanted Xavier to know that he had her support.

He returned her squeeze and gave her a thin smile. “There’s no need. Brandon West is one of the best lawyers in the city and there will be nothing for you to do at the police station but wait. Stay here where Ryan can look out for you.”

She opened her mouth to object. “Please. It will be easier on me if I know you’re safe. And if I’m not back in time to take you, Ryan or someone else from West Investigations can accompany you to your interview this afternoon.”

She’d forgotten about the interview. Eliot had sent her the details last night and she’d forwarded it along to Xavier.
